Councillors spoke up
Tuesday, 05 November 2019 10:55
The Council’s Education and Learning committee [12 November 2019] will consider a report giving an update on information and communications technology [ICT] in schools.
This will include an update on the SoSEP project Hub and Spokes, which is part of a funding package awarded to the Council to develop a network of science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM] hubs across the South of Scotland. These will address skills gaps in areas such as energy and engineering, construction, and care.
4 schools were identified to become digital spokes in phase 1: Annan Academy. Castle Douglas High School, Douglas Ewart High School, and Sanquhar Academy. The Bridge, in Dumfries, will also be a digital spoke. These venues will be enabled as modern video conferencing facilities equipped with hi-definition touch-screen displays, hi-spec video conference cameras, advanced microphones, and updated learning spaces.
The aim of the project is to enable students across the region to have access to courses and learning offered by Dumfries and Galloway College. It will prevent pupils having commute more than an hour each-way to and from the College for courses and give increase subject options.
The 4 schools in Dumfries and Galloway were chosen for phase 1 because of rurality, equal opportunity, geographical location [1 in each area], and existing partnership links with Dumfries and Galloway College. Another 5 of the region’s schools will be enabled in phase 2 next year.
Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of the Education and Learning committee, said: “This investment will deliver a significant improvement in opportunities to access education across our region. In a regional economy such as ours, it’s vital that we overcome barriers to education to ensure that people can develop the skills and knowledge they need.”
Councillor Ros Surtees, vice-chair, said: “Education opens doors to opportunities for people to become successful learners. It builds confidence and enables people to develop as citizens and contribute to society. So, I’m delighted with this investment, which will significantly improve education opportunities across our region.”
