Education Scotland sees improvements at Garlieston Primary School
Education Scotland inspectors visited Garlieston Primary School in February this year to find out how well children are learning and achieving.
Leadership of change, and ensuring wellbeing, equality and inclusion were evaluated as ‘Good’.
Learning, teaching and assessment, and raising attainment and achievement were judged to be ‘Satisfactory’.
Education Scotland recognised strengths in the school’s work:
• Children who respect and look after each other. They demonstrate a positive attitude to learning and are polite and well behaved.
• The headteacher, who has driven forward significant change in the school. In doing so, she has created a positive and welcoming ethos fostering a strong sense of family.
• The strong collaborative working practices across the school partnership, which are supporting improvements in the school.
Parent Council Chair, Jo Wallace, said: “I’m delighted that the hard work of all the staff and pupils at Garlieston Primary School has been recognised by Education Scotland. The positive findings reinforce the pride and confidence we have in our little school.”
Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of the Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning [CYPLL] committee, said: "Providing the best start in life for all our children is a priority for our Council. So, I'm pleased with Education Scotland's positive report on Garlieston Primary School. Thanks are due to all staff and pupils who contributed towards this."
Ros Surtees, vice chair, said: "Education should open the doors to opportunities that enable children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors to society. So, it's pleasing to see this positive inspection report on Garlieston Primary School.”
Education Scotland agreed with the next steps which the school had identified and have already been working on as part of their improvement journey: to continue to develop approaches to learning and teaching to enable children to take a greater lead in lessons and activities; to continue to develop a clear and shared strategy for raising attainment and achievement for all; and to continue to improve further the school’s approaches to self-evaluation to ensure greater rigour and impact.
Headteacher, Evelyn Steele stated, “I am extremely proud of the hard work and positive achievements of the staff, the children and the wider partnership. I am also pleased that Education Scotland noted the positivity and support we receive from our parents, carers and the wider community in and around Garlieston. I am sure we will continue to work together on our improvement journey to deliver the highest standards possible for our children.”
