Local people contribute to national review of human rights for people with disabilities
Monday, 19 August 2013 10:51
Local people are getting involved in a national project on human rights for people with disabilities.

Donna Anderson from Dumfries is contributing to a review of the implementation of the rights within the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).

Donna is one of a group of people with learning disabilities from across Scotland that meets in Glasgow every 6 weeks to talk about their individual life experiences. The topics of discussion are related to the Articles in the UNCRPD. User & Carer Involvement (UCI), based in Dumfries, is supporting two people from Dumfries and Galloway to contribute to this national review through 2013.

Donna said, “It is important that we know what our rights are. We have been discussing different issues such as where you live and having a choice. We also talked about being treated as equal. We will be writing a report and this will include my own experiences.”

The work is being hosted by the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability (SCLD) in Glasgow which has been asked by the government to produce a Scottish contribution to the UK review.

The UN makes sure that disabled people all over the world get the rights within the UNCRPD by asking states who have signed up to write a report about how rights are being implemented locally. The contributions in this report are based on the experiences of people with learning disabilities living across Scotland. This participation allows people with learning disabilities to be heard on a local, national and international level.

UCI hopes to work closely with people with learning disabilities in the future to provide information that generates greater awareness of the rights we all have.
