Youth Beatz rocks to Prof Green
Tuesday, 13 August 2013 16:00
A capacity crowd of 12000 people descended on the David Keswick Centre, Dumfries last Saturday for the largest free youth music event in Scotland.

The huge audience was thrilled by headline performances from Professor Green and Amelia Lily alongside a whole host of local acts topped by a superb set from Finding Albert.

Professor Green and Amelia Lily both commented on the amazing atmosphere, with Professor Green later tweeting, “Dumfries! Thank you all for coming out! I'm back in Scotland in November, see you soon xx”.   Amelia Lily also later tweeted, “Saturday was the BEST! Performing for you is the best feeling in the world!!”

One young person said; “This year’s Youth Beatz was amazing, best 1 I've been to, had a gr8 day!”

Youth Beatz featured the huge World of Wonka - an interactive youth zone organised by our Council's Youth Work Nithsdale and partners.  World of Wonka allowed groups of young people to learn about issues such as domestic abuse, sexual exploitation, poverty, online bullying, diversity and equality, body image and drugs and alcohol. This was designed and written by local young people who have been through issue based training, performance and production camp and who then performed on the day of Youth Beatz. World of Wonka is for young people aged 12 – 25 years old. 350 young people experienced this youth zone on the day.

Some of the comments from young people were:
“Don’t trust people online that you don’t know.”
“Made me think about why people are over eating and that it can be due to emotional trauma.”
“Made me feel guilty, ashamed and sad made me realise words hurt.”

Councillor Ivor Hyslop who opened the event said; “Youth Beatz 2013 was an outstanding success enjoyed by thousands of young people and families from throughout Dumfries and Galloway. Council staff and volunteers put in a huge effort to deliver a fantastic free event sponsored by Nithsdale Area Committee and many local businesses. Our team in Community Learning and Development and the young people who worked with them did a great job. There was a fabulous range of activities on offer ranging from Scotland’s Largest Bungee Run to a mobile ski slope. It was great to see the David Keswick Centre so busy with young people all of whom seemed to be having a great time listening to local bands and of course Amelia Lilly and Professor Green.”

The event was managed through a partnership led by our Council and part funded by Nithsdale Area Committee. Funding for the event was secured from Young Start Lottery Fund alongside main sponsors Unite, Magnox, D&G Elections Team and Domestic Abuse and Violence against Women Partnership.

Other attractions included; funfair rides, inflatables, Laserquest, Segways and a wide range of youth work providers promoting their services.

Connor Stenton, a young person on the events team, said, “It was great to see so many big acts coming to Dumfries and even better because it’s been organised by young people.”

Community Learning and Development Nithsdale would like to thank all partners involved in planning the event and hopefully look forward to building on the success in the future. To view pictures of the event go to www.youthbeatz.co.uk and follow links.
