Council’s Annandale and Eskdale Sports Academy shortlisted for national award
Wednesday, 10 July 2013 09:47
Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Annandale and Eskdale Sports Academy organised has been shortlisted in the Beyond Sport Awards, a major awards programme for sporting initiatives.

The Academy is one of four shortlisted projects (alongside Tottenham Hotspur FC) for the Beyond Sport Awards in the P&G UK Impact Award Category. This category demonstrates how sport is used to address social issues specific to the communities where it is based and how it utilised the power, support, resources or inspiration of the London 2012 Olympic Games to further its mission and objectives.

The winner of the P&G UK Impact Award will be announced on the night and will receive a funding package of £10,000.

Organisers of our Council’s Sports Academy have been invited to the Awards evening on 15 July at the City Hall in London, where projects and individuals will be recognised by 300 leaders in sport, government, business and development. Those attending include Lord Coe, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Multi-Paralympic Gold Medallist, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Councillor Denis Male, Chair of Annandale and Eskdale Area Committee said “This shortlisting is fantastic recognition for the Annandale and Eskdale Sports Academy, that this year celebrates its 10th year. The Sport Academy continues to deliver inspiring programmes and creates so many opportunities for participation and further development.”

Lord Coe said "London 2012 set out to inspire people to get active and enjoy sport. These awards are a testimony to the organisations and initiatives who are striving to keep the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games alive in our communities. Their role in delivering a legacy of sports participation is vital and is the bedrock of grassroots sports programmes”.

The full summer Sports Academy is well under way and any child wishing to try the many sports on offer should contact the Council on 030 33 33 3000, E-mail AESportsAcademy@dumgal.gov.uk or visit the Council website at www.dumgal.gov.uk/summer for more information.
