Dumfries and Galloway Youth Summit

Organisers of the 2013 D&G Youth Fest are excited to announce that the Youth Summit is fast approaching. The Summit, which is supported by agencies including Skills Development Scotland, NHS Scotland and others, will be held on 3 August in the Big Top Marquee, opposite the Oasis Youth Centre, Newall Terrace, Dumfries. This event will be a chance for all young people in the region to help shape their own futures and the communities they live and help create more positive outcomes and opportunities for young people across Dumfries and Galloway.
At the Summit there will be opportunities to listen to, work with and chat with Chris Lubbe, Nelson Mandela’s former bodyguard, and John Loughton, former Chair of the Scottish Youth Parliament and Vice Convenor of the Scottish Parliament’s Children and Young Peoples Committee. Both of these notable personalities inspire and motivate others into taking action and make significant impacts in their communities.
Chris Lubbe said “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to speak to the young people of Dumfries and Galloway; events such as these give us all such optimism and hope for building better futures with young people driving change for themselves.”
This is the first regional conference for all young people since 2006. It is an exciting time because the outcomes of the Summit will feed directly into the new Youth Vision and Youth Strategy which will shape future services for young people in our region.
Council Leader, Ivor Hyslop, said, “Dumfries and Galloway Council is committed to improving young people’s life chances and experiences in our region. To do this effectively we need to listen to what young people are saying to us; they can tell us what matters to them, rather than what we think matters. The Youth Summit is a great opportunity for young people to take charge of their own futures and the future potential of every young person in our region.”

Robyn Cochrane, young person from the steering group involved in organising the event said; “We are delighted to have Chris Lubbe and John Loughton to speak at the Summit. This will be a great chance for young people to come together and let others know what we think and where we want to go with our lives. Young people are the future – we need to be involved in making it a good one.”
