Shakespeare bonanza in Dumfries this summer

Dumfries will be host to performances of Shakespeare plays live and in the cinema in July and August.
There will be chance to see ‘King Lear’ performed on an Elizabethan-style stage by The Globe Theatre On Tour at The Crichton, Bank End Road on Wednesday 3 at 7.30pm and Thursday 4 July at 2.30pm & 7.30pm. The performances will take place outdoors so do take a rug or low-backed seat and suitable clothing. The play will go ahead in all but the most extreme weather conditions.
Tickets cost between £10.50 (under 18s) - £17.00 and are available from Shakespeare’s Globe Box Office Tel: 0207 401 9919 www.shakespeares globe.com or the Visit Scotland Box Office 01387 245566.
Over at the Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre, you can see pre-recorded productions of ‘Twelfth Night’ and ‘The Taming of The Shrew’. Originally staged at Shakespeare’s Globe, these productions are shown in their entirety giving you the opportunity to enjoy the world famous Globe Theatre and these critically acclaimed performances.
‘Twelfth Night’, screening on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 July at 7pm, is an all-male production starring Mark Rylance, winner of multiple Olivier and Tony Awards, and Stephen Fry. Twelfth Night was one of London theatre’s biggest hits of summer 2012. Critics raved that Mark Rylance’s “dazzling high definition performances” lifted the production “into the sublime”. Stephen Fry’s turn as Malvolio – his first return to the stage in 17 years – won him huge acclaim from critics and audiences and a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Actor, voted for by 60,000 members of the public.
Shakespeare's notorious battle of the sexes, ‘The Taming of the Shrew’, showing on Friday 2 and Saturday 3 August at 7pm, gives us one of theatre's great screwball double-acts in the shape of Katherina and Petruchio – a couple hell-bent on confusing and outwitting each other right up to the play's controversial conclusion.
Tickets cost £9 (£7 conc) and include an interval drink, are available from Robert Burns Centre Film Theatre on Mill Road 01387 264808.
