Young people in Dumfries and Galloway have released a new 1-year plan that seeks to create a region that is more free, just and equitable for all.
The movement, driven by local LGBTQ Young people and Allies better-known as ‘The Chameleons’, hopes to shape the future of LGBTQ visibility and representation in Dumfries and Galloway, and take action against the issues that affect them most.
The young changemakers recently took part in a 3-day residential, facilitated by the Council’s Youth Work Service and LGBT Youth Scotland, where they explored a range of issues facing LGBTQ young people aged 12–25 years.
The issues were grouped together under 4 themes; Health & Wellbeing, Social Opportunities & Allies, School & the Community, and Bullying, Hate Crime & Hate Speech. Against each theme, the young people have identified a range of actions that they will take forward over the next year.
This includes new campaigns that will take a stand against homophobia, transphobia and bullying, the development of new resources for schools and youth organisations, and more social opportunities for LGBT young people in Dumfries and Galloway.
The young people revealed their plans to local decision makers at an event at Easterbrook Hall last Wednesday night.
In attendance was Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Co-Leader, Councillor Linda Dorward, who thanked the young people for sharing their stories, perspectives and plans for the future, and said, “I am looking forward to finding out more about the young people’s priorities and how we can continue to support LGBT young people going forward in their fight as they strive for equality and fairness.”
Also in attendance, Councillor Tracey Little, the Provost of Dumfries, pledged her continued support for the young people in a heartfelt speech, in which she said “I will continue to be there for you throughout this journey and do everything I can to help you achieve your goals”
The new plan will be launched later this year, but in the meantime, a call is out for LGBT young people and their supporters to come forward and get involved in the projects. Demi Leigh Stacey, a member of Dumfries and Galloway’s Youth Council said “If you agree in equality and fair treatment in society of people who identify as LGBT, then please get in touch. The only way we can make a difference to the lives of young people is to work together and stand up for what we believe in”
If you would like more information on how to get involved in The Chameleons or would like to know about social opportunities for LGBT young people and their supporters, please email us at youth.work@dumgal.gov.uk or send us a message through our social media pages @YouthWorkDG.
