Summerhill art project gets underway
Tuesday, 23 April 2013 16:22
Sent on behalf of Summerhill Community Centre

An amazing work of art is being developed for Summerhill, in Dumfries. The land art project will form a unique shape big enough that people can even see it by satellite. There will be elements which encourage play and places for people to sit quietly. There will be grassed mounds, seats made from boulders and an urban wildflower meadow with lots of colourful flowers.

The community generated the ideas through workshops at Summerhill Community Centre and have helped choose design elements by working with artists, James Gordon and Susheila Jamieson. The ‘Amazon’ design for the Land Art reflects the community’s interest in their environment including world wide issues such as diminishing habitats like rainforests. A member of the ‘Base’Youth Project, Henry Rolfe said “Think Global Act Local is one of our slogans. It is great to see this being put into action with the ‘Base’ Youth Project and Summerhill Volunteers enhancing our environment in Summerhill and raising awareness about Global environmental issues”

The great news is that the on the ground work has just started and the digger came on site on Monday (15/04/13) to start the earth shaping for ‘Amazon’. Yesterday the community volunteers came together in the rain to mark out the design. The river like grass pathway will wind through colourful wildflower meadows by the summer. Councillor Ian Carruthers, Chair of Planning, Housing and Environment Services Committee said “It is great to bring art and the environment together in an urban community like this. I look forward to seeing people out playing, relaxing or just walking through this community land art”.

The Summerhill Land Art Project is funded by The Holywood Trust and Dumfries and Galloway Council. If you would like more information please contact Artist James Gordon on 07810 837068 or Dumfries and Galloway Council Ranger Elizabeth Tindal 01988 402401.
