Electric Vehicle Investment Shines Light On Council
Tuesday, 01 February 2022 11:04

Members of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee will meet on Thursday 3 February and receive a report on Transport Asset Class Investment as part of their packed agenda.

The report will highlight the investment the Council has made in electric vehicles across its fleet and provides insight into the number of vehicles contained within that fleet. The Council has bin lorries, buses, pool cars and vans to allow for all our services to be carried out. Whether household waste is being collected, vulnerable people are being cared for by home care or social work or squads of gardeners and grave diggers are dispatched to areas across D&G, the fleet of vehicles that facilitate this travel is a vital cog to the wheel.

Highlighted in the report is information in how the Council has invested in their fleet in recent months.  It’s not just about reducing the carbon footprint and replacing diesel for electric, but about working smarter by having an interchangeable chassis and bodies on some of our larger vehicles to allow them to carry out a range of tasks, as opposed to ‘only’ being a gritter or lorry, for example.

It’s not just on the road that improvements are being made. Lockerbie Railway Station vehicle parking is also mentioned, with work due to start later this year to increase parking at the popular commuting station.

Communities Committee Chair, Cllr Andy Ferguson welcomed the report. He said;

“The work that’s being done to reduce our carbon footprint as an organisation is fantastic, and the way we operate our fleet is a key component to that. I look forward to the continued investment in this area to continue the good work that’s well and truly underway.”

Vice Chair, Cllr John Martin commented;

“The diverse nature of our fleet means we need to be multi-facetted in our approach. The report demonstrates we are being just that, and more. By finding not only cleaner, but smarter ways to work we can continue to provide a top service to our residents regionwide.”
