The occasion, part of a joint effort from pupils and the school catering team, cooked the same meals from the same recipes, was held in conjunction with the #LambForStAndrewsDay initiative organised by the Institute of Auctioneers and Appraisers in Scotland and supported by NFU Scotland, Quality Meat Scotland and other stakeholders.
Pupils from the wider school were invited for a taster session and encouraged to give feedback to the school catering team who will use it when presenting dishes on any future menus.
Councillors will receive an update on the School Meals service at the Education and Learning Committee on Thursday 9th December.
The school meals service has made changes in accordance with the new Nutrition Bill Legislation from the Scottish Government in relation to the delivery of school meals and the service has been working closely with local and national suppliers to continue to develop new products for menus.
Pilot schemes like the event in Lockerbie will seek to look at how the Council’s school meals service can promote and introduce different types of red meat, i.e., Lamb and recipes to young people and their families.
Cllr Jeff Leaver, Chair of Education and Learning Committee said “A fantastic effort by the pupils and staff to bring this event to fruition. It’s very important for young people to be aware of locally produced food and we know that there is a link between children and young people being more focused at school when their nutritional needs are being met.”
Cllr Ros Surtees, Vice Chair of Education and Learning Committee said “It’s encouraging to see this example of young people working closely with the school catering service. It’s crucial for young people to feel engaged in what they eat at school and that we listen and take on board their opinions and ideas.”
