Tonne Up For Kerbside Waste
Monday, 16 August 2021 11:41

Dumfries and Galloway Council has sent out a huge thank-you to the residents of the region for ‘embracing’ the new kerbside waste and recycling service which has collected nearly 1,200 tonnes of materials in its first three months.

Following the re-introduction of kerbside recycling collections in Wigtownshire last November, the service was extended to Stewartry in late March and then rolled out across Nithsdale and Annandale & Eskdale. Since that time 1,190 tonnes of materials have been collected, including nearly 440 tonnes of mixed plastic and tin cans, and over 750 tonnes of mixed paper and cardboard, all of which has been sent for recycling contributing to the region’s ambition to achieve net zero carbon status by 2025.

As part of the new service, most households received two 240 litre recycling wheelie bins - a blue-lidded bin for paper, card and cardboard; and a red-lidded bin for plastics, metals and cartons. Flats and other properties which cannot accommodate the standard size bins received shared recycling bins or reusable recycling sacks. The service operates over a four-week cycle, with residents’ recyclable and non-recyclable waste collected on an alternating weekly basis with only one bin set out for collection each week.

In addition to the kerbside recycling collections, a new food waste recycling service will also be rolled out in Annan, Dalbeattie, Dumfries, Gretna and Lockerbie from September. Details on this service will be sent to homes in these areas in early September followed by the delivery of two small plastic food caddies, one for internal use and the other for external use, with compostable liners provided.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to all the people of Dumfries and Galloway for embracing the kerbside recycling service. While there are significant challenges in rolling out a region-wide service like this, we’ve managed to overcome many of these and we’re now delighted with the level of participation and the high volume of recyclable waste collected to date.”

Councillor John Martin, Vice Chair of the Council’s Communities Committee, also commented: “The new service is making a real difference to the region’s aim to achieve net zero carbon status by 2025 with nearly 1,200 tonnes of waste being recycled in the first three months. We’re delighted with the support we’ve had within our community and we encourage all residents to continue their efforts in recycling their household waste.”
