Dumfries and Galloway Council is delighted with the delivery and success of the Tour Series races in Castle Douglas on Thursday 12 August. A buoyant good natured crowd in excess of 2000 people enjoyed thrilling fast paced cycling at its best, on the challenging town centre circuit.
The Council has a long-standing partnership with Sweetspot, the parent company of the Tour Series, Tour of Britain and Women’s Tour. This partnership has been strengthened through our collaborative working on the Castle Douglas Tour Series races, and the challenges of putting on this event set against the background uncertainties of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council is also pleased to have worked very closely with the Castle Douglas Development Forum on the races and this weekend’s Bike and Food Festival. There is huge support for professional cycling events in the region and the Council will consider viable projects to bring more of these races to the region in the future.
Councillor Adam Wilson, the Council’s Events Champion said,
“ It was great to see people of all ages come out onto the streets of Castle Douglas yesterday to spectate at the Tour Series. They saw a record number of cyclists in the races which were exciting and competitive. The Council’s Major Festivals and Events Strategy aims to support individual and community wellbeing in 2021, and I believe our co-management of the Tour Series with Sweetspot did make a helpful contribution to this aim.”
