An exciting Summer Holiday activity programme for young people aged 12-17 in Wigtown Area has been launched by Wigtown Youth Forum.
The Forum received funding from Dumfries & Galloway Council’s Amazing Summer Fund to provide young people with free activities for the duration of the Summer Holidays, and the ambitious programme will be delivered in partnership with Youth Work Dumfries & Galloway.
The programme will offer young people a huge range of fun free activities that will take place from Monday 28th June – Sunday 15th August that will span the length and breadth of Wigtownshire, and beyond!
Activities on offer will feature some fun trips that will take young people to Galloway Activity Centre, Fusion Trampoline Park in Carlisle and M&D’s Theme Park in Strathclyde to name a few, but there will also be some activities that are closer to home. Personal Trainers C&C Fitness will be back in Stranraer and Newton Stewart to run Bootcamp sessions which will focus on using equipment to build strength; Movie Nights will run every Monday night at the Ryan Centre cinema showing Paddington, Rio, Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs and How to Train Your Dragon; and a Midnight Football League will see teams from Newton Stewart, Whithorn and Stranraer battling it out for the Championship trophy every Sunday night.
Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Communities Committee said: “It is great to see the breadth of opportunities provided in this Youth Work summer programme, I am sure young people will really enjoy participating in activities and experiences that can have a big impact in local communities.”
The last Sunday of the holidays will see the Big Sunday Lunch come to McMillan Hall, Newton Stewart, where young people will be invited to attend a celebratory lunch to mark the end of what will have been an Amazing Summer for young people across Wigtownshire.
Councillor John Martin, Vice-Chair of Communities Committee said of the programme: “It was pleasing to hear about the plans for the Youth Work summer programme. Young people really do deserve to enjoy an amazing summer full of opportunities they can share with their peers especially after COVID restrictions during lockdown, experiences like this can make a significant difference to them.”
Erin Thomson, Chair of Wigtown Youth Forum said: “Myself and everyone at Wigtown Youth Forum hope that young people enjoy the series of activities that we have on offer after what has been a challenging year for everyone, and that they can go and have fun with their friends.”
