Dumfries and Galloway Council’s commitment to the economic development of the region is being demonstrated once again thanks to the introduction of a new INSPIRE Graduate programme. Members of the Economy and Resources Committee will meet on Tuesday 15 June where they’ll be asked to approve the five graduate places within the council, as well as four places for organisations out with the local authority, meaning nine places in total will be advertised.
Graduates will be given the opportunity to work, learn and grow in the new scheme that aims to spot talent and future proof the workforces of the Council and local businesses. This new approach will see successful candidates tasked with roles within the Response, Renew and Recover (RRR) Team in the council, as well as four regional placements, external to the council.
Anyone applying must meet the criteria detailed in the report, which places large emphasis on links to the local area, including having lived in Dumfries and Galloway or graduated from the area. Those who attended secondary education in the region or those who have immediate family living in the area are also eligible. Due to funding criteria, this fantastic opportunity is available to those aged 16 to 25 (or 29 if they are a care-experienced young person).
Chair of the Economy and Resources Committee, Councillor Rob Davidson welcomed the INSPIRE programme approach. He said:
“In what has been a pretty uncertain and uninspiring time for us all in the region, but most certainly our young people, I am delighted that we can offer some light at the end of the tunnel by giving the local talent a chance to shine. This is a fantastic opportunity for graduates to gain real life work experience across a variety of teams and projects, receive top class training and take their first steps on their career path. I am proud our Council is at the heart of that and would encourage anyone interested to read the criteria and apply.”
Vice Chair, Councillor Archie Dryburgh added:
“Applying for a job, like most things at the moment, has been affected by Covid-19. That’s why the project team who have developed the INSPIRE project is looking at ways we can work through the recruitment process in a timeous and technology-friendly way. They’re looking at online interviews and different ways to engage with candidates. Our Council is demonstrating once again that despite Covid-19, we will not stand still and are committed to the sustainability of our region’s workforce, both in the short and long term.”
The report also makes clear that Dumfries and Galloway Council is a disability confident employer and is committed to providing employment, including INSPIRE and regional graduate opportunities for people with disabilities.
