Stepping up for Alphabet Challenge
Monday, 17 May 2021 16:54

Hundreds of people of all ages took part in a community walking challenge set up by Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Youth Work Service, Active Schools, Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“Alphabet Street West” took place in 7 towns across the West of the Region.  The idea to roll out the project across the area came from a successful Alphabet Street initiative that was started by organisations in Stranraer last year.

Maps, pinpointing sites in each of the towns where the letters A-Z were located were published on social media, along with weekly challenges encouraging individuals, friends and families to walk between letters in order to spell out different words and phrases.

Each week had a different theme, Easter, Scotland, Literature and Happiness and participants were selected at random to win one of the fantastic prizes on offer including free swim vouchers, ice skating lessons, book vouchers and hampers.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee, said: “A fantastic effort from all the services involved in pulling this together and creating opportunities for people to get out and about, have fun and enjoy spending time together.”

Councillor Jeff Leaver, Chair of the Education Committee, said: “Challenges such as this tap into our competitive spirit and provides a little extra incentive to keep walking! Its great to see so many people taking part as walking itself has so many health benefits.  Well done to everyone who took part.”

Alphabet Street West will be back in the summer with new routes, challenges and some exciting new features.  Keep your eye out on our Facebook Page @AlphabetStreetWest for more news coming soon!
