International Human Rights Day – 10 December 2020
Monday, 30 November 2020 15:07

International Human Rights Day takes place on Thursday 10 December.

The day marks the anniversary of the United Nations adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which proclaimed the rights that everyone is entitled to regardless of race, religion, sex, language, political or opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.  Available in more than 500 languages, this is the most translated document in the world.

This year the theme is, Recover Better – Stand up for Human Rights and relates to the COVID-19 pandemic.  It focuses on the need to build back better by ensuring Human Rights are central to recovery efforts.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Communities Committee said:

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights empowers us all and we can all take action in our own daily lives, to uphold the rights, that protect us all and thereby promote the kinship for all human beings. Our Council is committed to ensuring that all our citizens are aware of their rights and this day is an important part of that.”

Cllr John Martin, Vice Chair of Communities Committee commented:

“2020 has been a challenging year for us all and this important day allows us to reaffirm the importance of human rights in re-building our local community and to ensure equal opportunities for all, address any failures exposed by COVID-19 and to show our commitment to reducing inequalities, exclusion and discrimination. “
