£600k more for food and basic needs
Monday, 28 September 2020 11:48

Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Communities Committee will meet on Thursday this week and will be asked to agree on the allocation of more than £600k of funding that will help put food on the table for residents across the region.

The report tabled before elected members details that the scale of food insecurity in the region has increased due to Covid-19 and the number of families and individuals requiring support of some form or other has quadrupled in the last five months.

Community support for the project has been unrelenting, and the report acknowledges the role that food providers in the region have played in providing the help and support to those who require it.

Communities Committee Chairman, Councillor Andy Ferguson said:

“This is a brilliant example of what can be achieved when our Council and communities work hand in hand to provide help to those people within communities across the area who need our support. The £600k of funding will continue to support the organisations and volunteers to provide this vital service.”

The report also details that some adjustments will be made to the original allocations of funding, after taking into consideration feedback from the community food providers. These adjustments take into account home energy, community resilience and connectivity factors that all have a bearing on the level of support required and received.

Councillor John Martin who is Vice Chairman of Communities Committee said ahead of the meeting:

“We have taken the feedback received from the community food providers, who are doing a fantastic job in difficult times, and feel the adjustments mentioned in the report appendix are a fair representation of what each provider requires to continue to provide a wonderful service.”

The report can be viewed on our website at www.dumgal.gov.uk and the meeting will be live streamed at www.dumgal.gov.uk/dgclive
