Council Leaders say Black Lives Matter
Monday, 08 June 2020 15:05
At this week’s meeting of COVID-19 Ad Hoc Sub Committee, Members will discuss their commitment to increasing equality of opportunity for all individuals within our region in light of the Black Lives Matter movement. The motion is being put forward by the Council Leaders to show solidarity and support for the black community and for anyone experiencing racism.
Support for the Black Lives Matter Movement follows by the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, a 46 year-old black American, at the hands of white police officers now arrested and charged with murder. Yesterday (Sunday) a number of protest marches took place across the country including an event in Dumfries town centre, encouraging individuals to demonstrate their support for Black people in our local communities.
Last week, all Council leaders from across Scotland issued a joint statement through COSLA saying Black Lives Matter. Similarly, Dumfries and Galloway Youth Council met in emergency session last week to express its support for the #BlackLivesMatter movement and to discuss how it can promote anti-racist action and information.
This Friday at the committee meeting, Elected Members will confirm their position and that Black Lives Matter.
Council Leader, Elaine Murray, said ““in common with millions worldwide, we are horrified by the death in Minneapolis of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black American, at the hands of white police officers now arrested and charged with murder. His death highlights the discrimination and injustice that still exists for BAME (black and minority ethnic) communities. This must stop now. We support the Black Lives Matter movement”.
Depute Leader, Rob Davidson, echoed these comments saying ““Dumfries and Galloway Council stands for equality and diversity. We are in complete solidarity with black people in America, in Britain, and around the world. Our council is committed to increasing equality of opportunity in our region – a region where all people are welcome to live, learn, work and stay”.
