Earth Hour 2020 Event At Dumfries Museum
Monday, 09 March 2020 14:59

Highlighting the need for action on climate change Dumfries Museum is joining the Earth Hour 2020 global event on 28 March 8.15pm to 9.45pm. As lights are switched off around the world visitors to Dumfries Museum will be treated to tales from the darkness – traditional stories from a time before electricity with Tom Hughes and JoAnne McKay.

Refreshments will be served before the lights go out at 8.30pm. The candles will be lit and the stories and readings begin. Tom will be telling tales from the rich repertoire of the folk tradition, the stories which would be told around the fireplace on long nights.  From dark tales to make the mind whirr and spine tingle, to stories of dragons, fools, and hidden treasure.

JoAnne will be reading stories from around the world that highlight the different cultures and climates of this earth. She will be telling tales whose origins range from Australasia to the Arctic regions - via Africa and the Americas - celebrating the diversity of our shared, and very singular, planet.

This is a free event and the stories will be suitable for all adults and children. Little ones might like to come along in their pyjamas ready for bed afterwards. Booking is not essential but it would help us to plan ahead if you can register on our Facebook event page @DumfriesMuseum.

Councillor Andy Ferguson, Chair of Communities, said;

“We are pleased to take part in this global event again. Dumfries and Galloway Council reconfirmed our commitment to action on climate change in January last year when we agreed the council-wide Environment Policy Framework 2018 to 2032. The Framework enables the Council’s priority to work towards becoming a carbon neutral region”.

Councillor John Martin, Vice-Chair of Communities, said;

As individuals we can all contribute to positive action on climate change by making simple lifestyle changes such as turning off unnecessary lights. On 28 March millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories will be switching off their lights to show support for our planet and you are invited to be part of this event at Dumfries Museum.
