North West Resource Centre

The North West Resource Centre is the hub for adult learning activities provided by Community Learning and Development (CLD) (Nithsdale) within Lower Nithsdale. CLD (Nithsdale) is part of Dumfries and Galloway Council's Community and Customer Services.

CLD (Nithsdale) works throughout the area delivering a range of community based adult learning activities that promote lifelong learning. These include help with reading writing and working with numbers, support for individuals for whom English is a second language; first steps in computing, family learning activities and much more. The service also builds community capacity through work with community groups, community centres, village halls and other organisations.

Our services:

Adult Literacy and Numeracy: Reading, Writing & Numbers

Do you:

  • Panic if you don't know how to spell a word?
  • Worry about filling in forms?
  • Want to help your children with schoolwork but don't know where to start?
  • Put off writing letters?
  • Have trouble working out your phone, gas or electricity bills?

- then we can help.

Free and confidential advice and support is available for anyone who feels their reading, writing or number skills might need refreshing. It's never too late to brush up on your reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation or writing. Or why not improve your skills in working with numbers? This could mean working with time, supermarket receipts or even budgeting your cash, including fractions and decimals. Learning takes place at your own pace in a relaxed and friendly environment. Students can work in small groups or one-to-one with their own tutor. Cost: Free. Venues throughout Dumfries.

English - Making it Easy

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

Do you want to improve your English?

We offer a range of classes to suit learners who have low level English Language skills. All learners are assessed to gauge their level of English and matched into groups which best suit the learner's ability. All our classes are free of charge and take place in Dumfries High School.

We also offer a study skills group (drop In) for anyone working on certificates e.g. Cambridge First Certificate, Life in the UK Test.

Family Learning: What is family learning?

Family learning is the opportunity for families to participate in and enjoy learning together. It aims to give parents and carers* of primary school children the knowledge and understanding to support their child's learning and the opportunity to widen their own learning. (*this includes grannies, granddads, aunts, uncles, foster parents, step parents etc.)

NW Dumfries Learners' Forum Aims of Family Learning in Dumfries and Galloway:

  • To provide opportunities for families to learn together.
  • To support literacy, language and numeracy learning within families.
  • To inform parents/carers about the curriculum and how children learn in school
  • To build skills and share ideas with parents/carers so that they are more able to help and support their children's learning at home.
  • To promote good home/school relationships and a positive attitude to lifelong learning.
  • To provide a way of drawing parents into learning and encourage them to pursue their own learning.
  • To provide opportunities for progression through further family learning programmes, college courses or Community based adult learning (CBAL)
  • To demonstrate learning can be fun.

The following family learning activities have been offered recently:

  • Fun phyiscal health and well-being programme
  • Nursery Parent and Child After School Activity Club
  • Parent and Child Art and Craft workshops
  • Teeny Boppers Parent and Toddler Group

Where can I take part in Family Learning?
In Dumfries and Galloway Family Learning is school based and Family Learning Co-ordinators are attached to particular schools. Most Family Learning activities are held in these schools.

British Sign Language:

This is a valuable skill to hold. Our very enthusiastic tutor will guide you through the first stages of learning this language. This course is free, practical and lots of fun.

Learners Together:

Learners Together is a recently formed community group whose aim is:

To enhance adults lives and opportunities and inspire the community by supporting the provision of lifelong learning, primarily in North West Dumfries and so help to reduce the impact of social exclusion.

Gàidhlig Dumgal:

Gàidhlig Dumgal is a community group whose objectives are to:

  • Promote awareness of, and interest and involvement in, Gaelic language, literature, music and other aspects of Gaelic culture, throughout Dumfries & Galloway.
  • Work in collaboration with other local and national organisations in the promotion and development of Gaelic language and culture.
  • Promote the use of Gaelic language in everyday life.
  • Provide support and encouragement to those interested in furthering their knowledge and understanding of Gaelic language and culture.
  • Secure funding that will support the objectives listed above.

North West Dumfries Community Café Ltd. (CAFÉ DG2)

The North West Resource Centre Café Ltd (Café DG2) is a community business providing a venue for the community to meet with friends, share ideas, and discuss learning opportunities while enjoying affordable, locally prepared meals.

The café is a thriving centre-piece to the community of North West Dumfries. Employing one Full time café coordinator, one trainee assistant and supporting learning and skills development for five volunteers, one youth placement and one skills placement.

The café project is supported by Community Learning and Development Nithsdale and the board of management works with a number of partner agencies: (Building Healthy Communities - Dumfries, NCVS, NHS Dumfries, Rathbone, Lowland training; Employability and Skills Nithsdale and the Nithsdale Area committee).

The cafe operates on four fixed days per week between 10am - 2pm and occasional weekend events.

Sewing Sews'

Sewing Sews' are a community group whose aim is to:

Sewing Class Promote the art and craft of patchwork quilting and other sewing related projects within Dumfries and the surrounding area:

  • To encourage and maintain high standards of craftsmanship and design in both traditional and contemporary quilting.
  • To encourage communication and exchange of ideas and information among quilt makers/artisans.
  • To facilitate or provide workshops, lectures and seminars with local and/or international tutors and lecturers.
  • To be a central contact point for any persons wishing to exchange information regarding quilters, quilt making and other sewing related projects.
  • To provide and maintain a register of groups, guilds and tutors.
  • To facilitate events including exhibitions and competitions.
  • To raise funds for any or all of these objectives.
  • To associate and/or affiliate with other societies and interest groups, providing that such association is in the interest of the members and would promote the general aims and objectives of the group.
  • To provide such other activities for the group members as may from time to time be determined by the Committee.
