Proposed New Cemetery

We need to forward plan for burial space in the Dumfries Burgh to ensure there is sufficient local provision in the future.

Dumfries Burgh currently has access to four burial sites all of which have varying space availability:

  • Dumfries High Cemetery
  • St Andrews Cemetery
  • St Michael's Cemetery
  • Troqueer Cemetery

We have already provided new cemetery provisions for Kirkconnel and Rigg and have extended sites at Minnigaff and Gatehouse in the last five years.  Finding suitable land for cemetery provision is becoming extremely difficult, mainly due to the strict requirements set by the Icon for pdf SEPA Guidance Document GU32 [PDF - 211KB] .

The Council has identified a site on Castle Douglas Road for the new cemetery and a proposal has been submitted for planning permission and is currently being considered.  We are consulting with interested parties on this proposal:

Background

We have undertaken a feasibility study of the sites around Dumfries, including Heathhall, Dalbeattie Road, Maxwelltown High School, Maxwelltown Industrial Estate and Waterside Road, Cargenbridge. This work has included desk top studies and on-site ground investigation to determine suitability of the prevailing ground conditions.

Most of the sites have proven to be unsuitable for various reasons including adverse ground conditions, problematic access, land contamination and high water tables.  All of these factors have resulted in the Castle Douglas Road site emerging as the most suitable.  This is now the preferred location.

Information Event

We hosted an information event on Monday 28 January.

During the event we discussed the proposal for the new Dumfries cemetery, answered questions and gave the opportunity for the public to provide feedback.

Views from the event will be taken into consideration and the findings reported back to the design team developing the proposals.

Moving forward and subject to planning approval, negotiations will proceed to secure the acquisition of the site and thereafter complete the design and procurement of the proposal.
