Abandoned vehicles

Our Community Safety Team deals with abandoned vehicles.

There is no legal definition for an abandoned vehicle but we'd consider a vehicle to be abandoned if it hasn't moved for a considerable time and it:

  • is damaged or in a run-down state
  • has no number plates
  • contains waste
  • attracts vandals
  • has no registered keeper on the DVLA system
  • has a registered keeper but they fail to respond to our correspondence

How to report an abandoned vehicle

If the vehicle shows signs of being abandoned, please follow these steps before you contact us:

  1. If the car is causing an obstruction, report this to Police Scotland on 101.
  2. Check if the vehicle is taxed on the DVLA website. If it's not taxed, report the untaxed vehicle to the DVLA. Some historical vehicles may be exempt from road tax. An untaxed vehicle may not automatically be assumed to be abandoned.
  3. Check with your neighbours or local businesses to see if anyone knows the registered keeper of the vehicle.
